Hour by Hour β Miami & Biscayne Bay
Boating score %South Florida & the Keys Fishing
Sailfish season is switching on along the reef edge, Spanish mackerel are under the birds in Biscayne Bay, and the fall bonefish are back on the flats.
Today's Best Bets
2. King & Spanish mackerel — Kingfish are on the same reef-edge grounds off Miami (same Sea Witch, drift-bait and pilchard-chum tactics), and Keys kings and cobia are on the wrecks and the reef edge as the water cools. Inshore, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and jack crevalle are feeding under diving birds in open water in North Biscayne Bay, and the South Bay finger channels should produce a mixed bag — Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, snappers and jacks — eager for a live shrimp or live pilchard. Pier and jetty anglers at the inlets are taking Spanish on live shrimp, live pilchards and shiny baitfish artificials.
3. Bonefish — November is prime fall bonefish time when the weather allows. A week of big wind and rain dirtied South Bay, but as conditions settle this week the fish should be back up and feeding on the ocean-side flats and the inside flats of South Bay in Biscayne Bay. Keys calendars call November's oceanside tides the best bonefish tides of the year, Key Largo to Key West; after a front, bones (and permit) slide to deeper channels and oceanside edges, then the flats refill after a couple of warm days.
Note: Also: permit on the same Biscayne flats as the bonefish; yellowtail snapper steady day and night on reefs outside 60 ft off Miami — anchor, chum, then fish small chunks of ballyhoo; mutton snapper over the artificial reefs on live ballyhoo, pilchards, pinfish and big bonito strips; nighttime snook excellent around the North Biscayne bay bridges as mullet schools move through; at Flamingo, trout over the First National Bank flats and around Sandy Key on live shrimp or a ladyfish strip under a Cajun Thunder float. Florida Sportsman's Keys forecast has no November entry yet (latest Oct. 23), so the Keys notes lean on its October pattern plus season calendars — flagged, not dressed up.
Tide windows: Virginia Key (Miami): high 5:01 PM (2.6 ft), low 10:52 AM (second high 4:38 AM). Drift the reef edge into the afternoon high; the finger channels fish best with water moving.
Bait: Live pilchards for the reef-edge chum line, ballyhoo dead or alive, and live shrimp for the inshore mixed bag. Find a bait shop near the ramp · Check today's tides & forecast.
What's Biting Now
• King mackerel — just outside the outer reef to 200 ft off Miami; on Keys wrecks and the reef edge as water cools.
• Spanish mackerel — under the birds in North Biscayne Bay and in South Bay's finger channels on live shrimp and pilchards.
• Bonefish — peak fall fish; oceanside flats in Biscayne Bay and the Keys on the year's best tides, between fronts.
• Yellowtail snapper — steady on reefs outside 60 ft off Miami and on Lower Keys reefs; anchor, chum, small ballyhoo chunks.
Licenses & Seasons
• Bonefish: catch-and-release only (since 2011); hook-and-line gear only.
• Spotted seatrout (Biscayne & Florida Bay): open year-round, bag 3, slot 15″–19″, one over-slot fish per vessel.
• Flounder: CLOSED Oct. 15–Nov. 30 statewide.
• Permit, sailfish, mackerels: check FWC saltwater fishing before keeping — and federal HMS rules for sailfish offshore. A Florida saltwater license is required.
