It's rockfish season — the fall striped bass bite is peaking from the Susquehanna Flats to Hampton Roads, with speckled trout in the Virginia rivers and tautog building on the Bridge-Tunnel.
Today's Best Bets
2. Speckled trout — November is usually prime time for big “gator” trout in the Virginia tributaries — honestly, this year Virginia has seen mostly small ones so far. The water to try: the Elizabeth River (getting the most attention), Lynnhaven Inlet, Rudee Inlet, Mobjack Bay and the Rappahannock. Fish grass beds close to deeper water, slow the retrieve way down, and throw 3–4 inch paddletails and sinking jerkbaits on light jig heads. Maryland's last specks are fading out from Hoopers Island through Tangier Sound.
3. Tautog — The tog bite at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and other deepwater structure should pick up serious steam this month, and November is prime time for shoreline anglers tossing flea or crab baits tight to structure. Virginia reports confirm tog are available now and stay that way through fall and winter.
Note: Also: white perch are heading deep in the tidal rivers — dropper rigs with 2-inch Gulps or bloodworm bottom rigs over oyster bars; blue catfish are feeding hard in the lower tidal rivers on cut bait or live perch; red drum are tail-end inside the Bay, with the better action in the Virginia Beach surf on fresh cut mullet. Virginia-side intel is thinner than Maryland's (no state weekly report exists for VA) — it rests on tackle-shop reports and a monthly outlook, and the sources list says so.
Tide windows: Annapolis: high 1:15 PM, lows 7:11 AM and 7:26 PM. DNR's advice: a running tide helps, and a flood tide is always an advantage up-Bay — cast the shallows at first and last light, jig the channel edges in between.
